Post First HUGE storm of the season..
Wowee. I drove through a supermarket puddle at walking speed-and a wave of water shot up to window level. Yep,a pineapple express. Mild temps- 15-16 C.
First good rain here since mid May. This is the biggest October storm I can remember..wouldn't say its a record, but must be close. Winds too.
Considering water rates have skyrocketed the last two years...it's liquid gold falling from the sky. And if my roof don't leak-let it pour!

We've had some killer winds today; however, the rain has completely missed me so far. Never seen so much blowing dust/leaves/needles/debris around here.

Mowed the lawn yesterday. I think I clogged the air filter with all the dust. Today though, some light rain fell in the late afternoon (no wind). Forecast calls for similar situations thru Friday.

Cheers, Barrie.

No wind here today, but we did get a little rain in the morning, mostly sunny in the afternoon. Nice to see the night time temps go back up. 8) No frost yet!

This first wave of the storm was pretty incredible for here, I certainly wasn't expecting this much rain this early. Unfortunately it also pointed out that I have some serious work to do on getting my roof ship shape, not what I wanted to be dealing with today. I hate having to track down where the water is getting in, and seriously wish I didn't have a flat roof, they always spring leaks sooner or later. It was windy here also, but nothing extraordinary, the Tree Dahlias are still intact, no damages in the neighborhood to trees, no power outages in my neighborhood, but it was a lot stronger out over the bay, where one of the bridges was closed for hours when a semitruck was blown sideways while crossing between Richmond and San Rafael. Good thing those guard rails are well built, or the driver would have ended up in the bay...

It's still very windy, and a mountain ash tree behind our garage blew down. We were thinking of getting rid of it anyways. I'm glad I don't live in an area that is susceptible to power outages. Still super dry and dusty out there.... kind of a crazy start to autumn, a storm with so much punch yet completely dry (here).

All that wind is missing us up here Ian. Only light breezes, nothing out of the ordinary. We did get rain in the afternoon yesterday and a bit this morning. I wonder if the winds will pick up once the Pineapple express moves in and temps move up into the mid 60's as forecast?

David ... winds strong enough to blow a semi trailer around? Wow, he's lucky as you say. Did the storm affect any of the SoCal areas?

Cheers, Barrie.

It was a record!..it rated a 8.2 on a scale of all time seasonal storms and was an October record.
I had to drive on the freeway and was down to near half posted speed-and few passed me by going faster. Just the fools as always.
The rental cottage's "new" roof rated for 20 years installed last year leaked!..I called the contractor,oops-he might not have sealed around roof pipes with roofing cement. A word to the wise as to where to look for leaks if the roof seems fine otherwise.
Still, it was a marvel to see so much heavy rain and huge subtropical raindrops pound on the cars roof as if they were going to make dents!
btw, 5-6" of rain-unheard of- fell over the bay area..more in the hills. Never seen anything like that for so long.

Any concern of landslides? That much rain in such a short span would make some nervous.

Cheers, Barrie.

No landslides-but its a shockerroo Barrie to see dry creekbeds flowing on the first rains..some years that takes weeks of our pitter patter rains to get movement.
The local news had tons of downed trees stories, I noticed some on my daily drive had already been chainsawed by city crews..sigh, one day their shading the street in full leaf, next day-a stump and pile of logs!..car wrecks galore as not only did we have typhoon rains..but since it hadnt rained since May,the roads were a mix of oil and water, the drains clogged with summer debris.
Just so un bay area that to walk from the car through the parking lot,to the market I was drenched..nope,I dont have an umbrella? its California!

Those heavy rainstorms you also have in Southern Europe and Turcky in this time of the year. After a long hot dry summer they get floodings in autumn.

Thats the price you have to pay in a mediterranean climate...

Post Unfortunately for us...
The rain was very spotty down here...most areas around San Diego either had a trace or a few hundredths of an inch (except a little more in the mountains)--mostly yesterday. From Orange County and points northwest, rainfall was more substantial.

Interesting that this is from a former typhoon (I believe it was Melor) in the West Pacific which moved north into the westerlies (around Japan) and then east along the path of a typical winter storm! This has certainly been quite an active typhoon season in the West Pacific.

Humm... :? that can't bode well for us here in the PNW coastal region for the upcoming winter if trends continue.

Cheers, Barrie.

I see what you mean about the rain. I looked on the Wunderground website and you had quite a rain shower!

http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... hspan=year

The bottom graph with the rainfall shows it well.
I'd think I'd get an Umbrella even though it is California. if I were you. You folks there have always got to look gorgeous. Never a bad hair day.
