I would think water-too much,or maybe the quality is too salty/minerally?. You might try removing the old soil and replanting in fresh.

looks like sometihing has been nibbling away at parts of it, the edges seem to my eyes like they have been munched away rather than just dieing

according to Wiki.....

Agave species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera (butterfly and moth) species including Batrachedra striolata, which has been recorded on A shawii.

I don't think that agave scale is necessarily a terminal condition, León. Any good systemic pesticide -- applied once every ten days for a six-week period -- should take care of it. Now if the problem is el picudo del agave, then you need to get rid of it and leave that planting spot permanently vacant. Do you have meocuiles in your area, or are you too far north?

Really, from what I can see, it looks more like some kind of mammalian predation -- mouse, rat or rabbit -- followed by fungal necrosis around the wound margins.

If its hard to replace-blast it with jets of water to remove scale and rot,let dry, then plant it in ground to give it strength. That's what I would do and I know EVERYthing

thank you guys, for the cheers and good humor.

I was told by nurseryman and other guys about the agave mite, and told A. gdl was specially prone to agave mite. also found it may only disfigure (spelling¿?) it and still grow, though. it´s my only A. gdl and seems a lovely plant. but then I´m "only" 9 hr north of Gdl.

PS: miticide prices seems utterly expensive (and seem they only control it and may eventually spread to other plants).

cheerios
