Re: A new cycads season begin
The blue Cycads from Australia like Cycas cairnsiana are still rare to find. Not that the African blues are not just as impressive. I wonder if the Australians are just more tropical- too tropical- for the bay area?

Re: A new cycads season begin
Hi Stan
I have Australian Cycas platyphylla, I grow as well as South African cycads and I see no problem here.

Re: A new cycads season begin
As of now,the only Cycad to flush for me this early in the summer is Ceratozamia mexicana. It will awhile before the Cycas thoursii or Dioons edule and spinulosum move. Encephalartos ferox is a late summer flusher. Its in too much shade. My mini collection also has a Zamia and of course Cycas revoluta. E.lemanii is the only other I have plans to get...one day.

Re: A new cycads season begin
Stunning collection. I'd have armed guards around it 24/7! In my pitiful collection Ceratozamia robusta, Zamia pseudoparasitica, and Encephalartos horridus are flushing now. Of these only the Ceratozamia was outside this winter, showing this species to be remarkably hardy in less than perfect conditions - mind you, they were brought in during frost events. All the Australian "blue" Cycas don't like winter outside - too wet and cold.

Re: A new cycads season begin
From Australia I have only one representative of cycad platyphylla, cultivate the same conditions as Encephalartos and no problem

Re: A new cycads season begin
They have E.platyphylla at UC Berkeley. Planted out large, they have done...ok . Better then a cycad that likes very warm to hot conditions should be doing in Berkeley. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/163422/

Beautiful specimens Josef. Do you grow them in completely inorganic compost?

Hi Kevin I feed them every two weeks from March to October. I switch between different kinds of fertilizer. Josef
