Did you spot, for those of us who can view coverage of Chelsea, a small piece on Crug nursery on the Monday night. A fantastic looking stand of the rare and unusual including Disporum longistylum which looked like a bamboo not a spp from the convallariaceae family. Can anybody unearth any information of the Uocodendron whartonii, what a plant to have in your collection, worth the 164 mile drive to North wales to be sure. Anyone give me an id on this prickly feller? Not sure whether there is any copyright restrictions on taking pictures of my tv if so these pictures may disappear. |

Last one looks like a Berberis sp. Nice stand - they deserved the Gold.. Purely for the odd/new intros that intrigue people - not that anyone is really going to be able to afford many of them - as you can tell I'm sceptical how hardy and 'easy' to grow some of their plants are. |

It's worth a trip to Crug. There are some great plants for sale in the sales area at good prices, though I agree that they sell lots of plants which may well survive in the generally warm climate of coastal Wales but not inland. They do sell loads of rareties which are total hardy, however. Martin |

I've got Disporum longistylum, a variety called 'Green Giant'. Not had it long though, picked it up at Beeches Nursery and the shoots are only a couple of inches tall so far. Pete |

Either that is a joke or they have just named a plant firstly after both theirs and my guide in Vietnam (Uoc) and the late Peter Wharton (ex curator of the David C. Lamb Asian Garden at UBCBG). There's nothing on the web about it. Either it is a proposed name or it is has only very recently been described somewhere. Obviously Hamamelidaceae and obviously from N. Vietnam. |

Hi Kev, the plant on the last pic is Berberis insignis v. insignis. We planted one out three years ago and has remained fine and unaffected by two winters since, so I can imagine it will do well in your location too. We have Disporum longistylum, D. cantoniense 'Night Heron', and D. cantoniense 'Green Giant' planted at the same time last year and the longistylum is racing ahead of the other two. D.c.'Green Giant' has been massed produced by the Dutch already and should be more readily available at GC's very soon. Not sure if D. longistylum 'Green Giant' is the same as above but funny enough I have that too as well. Superficially they look the same but then again they are still in the process of fully enfurling. |

Nick nice sleuthing, surely not though, all will no doubt be revealed in time but nothing as yet on their website. The flowers are classic Witch hazel looking it would be nice to think it would have similar hardiness qualities but I fear not. Mark/ James thanks for the info and id on the Berberis and Disporus a plant that seems to have passed my by.....how did that happen! |

Is it the plants which at the time Carol Klein described as "like a Solomon's Seal on steroids" (or words to that effect)? If so, I have been looking out for it ever since but haven't seen any hint of it. I'd love one. |

David: http://www.hillviewhardyplants.com/prod ... een-giant/ and in stock. Or you could try one of these: https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/Nurseries ... ery=312066 They're only € 5,- on the other side of the pond though. |

I live near Hillview but that plant Green Giant cultivar looks quite shrubby. It was the elegant nature of the long canes which appealed to me. I notice that on "The Frustrated Gardener" website that the Chelsea plant was simply named D. longistylum with the Bleddyn and Sue initials: B and SWJ 2859. |

I got my Disporum longistylum (and rather a lot of other tasty plants) from www.edulis.co.uk Martin, as for the "Solomon's Seal on steroids", I suspect it may be a Maianthemum. Either M. tatsiense or M. oleraceum. Edulis is where I got tatsiense from. It's also listed by CGF although I've never seen it at the nursery. |

Hi, Just an update about Uocodendron whartonii. It has been recently classified as a new species of Disanthus. Now Disanthus ovatifolius. I was trying to insert a link but I am computer dumb. Anyway, it is a very pretty shrub. Has anyone been growing it? |
