Washingtonia
Just a few shots of my Washingtonia fillibusta after this winter. BEFORE DURING AFTER Looks like it was growing But on closer inspection not so everything pulled out of the center in a mushy mess. So it got the chop I do not think I could have offered the palm in question any more protection..............how does yours look?

Re: Washingtonia
sorry to see that Kev.
Mine is growing slowly and the emerging spear is damaged (filfera forgot to add), I hope it grows out. last year I had two that I thought were going to pull through, the spear started to emerge then the spear collapsed and both pulled..so I am weary at the moment. I will post a pic when I next get a chance. I think I am fooling myself into believing its hardier then it is..just so I can keep trying as its a fantastic site seeing a large one doing well.

Re: Washingtonia
Mo hope I am wrong but I would not be surprised if you end up pulling the spear out, the marks on mine were moving upwards and the leaves looked quite green, but to no avail........I suppose on the plus side you have not dug yours up and moved it like wot I dun!!!!

Re: Washingtonia
Thats a shame Kev as the Washingtonia looked so nice before . Obviously last winter was more extreme than normal as Washy's take -9 c with only some minor burn . The good news is they are very fast growing and a replacement palm will establish in no time .
How cold did you get last winter ?

Re: Washingtonia
Thats such a shame Kev it looked a very nice plant indeed. The Washingtonia I have followed exactly the same patten as yours did except that the spear has not pulled so I've left it in a sunny site and hope it recovers. cheers Stuart

Re: Washingtonia
I think most Washingtonia this size have gone the same way this year. It was not the ultimate lows that did for these palms which was only a couple of times into the -6 C but the constant near freezing day time highs of just 2 C/ 3 C for months on end. These palms are fairly cheap and replacing is not a problem you could buy one half that size for around £20 .........maybe summer bedding then.

Re: Washingtonia
my W. robusta looked a bit the same after last winter. the only protection it had was a little roof to keep it dry. it did not speerpull but they looked as brown like yours and did not make a move when it warmed up. so i also took the saw. now it is growing but slowly.
this is how it looks at the moment.

Re: Washingtonia
No pics to hand but I have one here, unprotected, that had major leaf burn but is now romping away merrily. An alleged 'filibusta' nearby is struggling, but then it has been ever since I planted it.

Re: Washingtonia
Didn't know you could saw the top off! Can you only do this with Washies - or also other palms? I have a struggling Capitata, Yatay, Brahea, Date Palm and Washy at the moment. Just wondering at what point you bite the bullet and hack it off? Is it a last resort - or a better option than leaving a gaping hole there? I have noticed that on my capitata and Yata - the spear has turned brown first, and a slow degradation of the outer leaves is occurring. The Yatay is now completely brown - but the Capitata is heading that way. I am hitting them all with palmbooster 2/3 times a week now - but nothing seems to be moving

Re: Washingtonia
Washingtonia robusta survived last winter here again, with yes also heavy leaf damage again. This spring I cut the most damaged leafes off and leave the rest for some green. At the moment it already has growed 5 leafes from I gues 90-100 centimeter wide, number 6 is almost the same like the 5 before, and 2 new spears are ready (Leaf number 7 and and from one them it will letting lose somewhere this week. When the 2 spears also been the same like the leafes now, I'm going to cut off the last damaged leafes from the winter. Here some pictures from it today, it's getting bigger and bigger! New leafes... Here can you see the last damaged leafes from the winter.. Some close up's for fun! It's a shame to see yours haven't survived very well Kev, it was also a beauty!
