It would seem this product is mainly for the convenience of immediate effects. The wood being used has no lasting qualities if not protected from direct contact with soil, and likely to rot out after just a year or two. I suppose if the interior of such a planter was lined with a drainage product such as "Mirafi", which is a sandwich of filter fabric and a waffle hard plastic to be used against retaining walls and buildings and also serves as an air break between soil and building/wood surfaces, it could be longer lasting. For more permanent, fast set-up planters, I prefer to use galvanized steel horse troughs; punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage, and set in place, and likely to last for 10 to 15 years. I find such applications especially useful for planting running bamboos such as Black stem bamboo, where you don't want to go to the expense and labor of installing root barriers below ground.

I've seen people use them before, I thought they looked rather hideous, but they seemed to function just fine.

The timber has been Heat Treated in connection with Kiln Drying as well as Debarked, i.e. is ISPM 15 compliant (even meets phytosanitary regulations) and therefore can be shipped all over the world. Each board carries a small stamp confirming that.

Being able to ship anywhere in the world doesn't mean that this type of wood is particularly rot resistant, are you promoting this because you have a stake in it?

What do they treat it with? I suppose that might not matter though if your not putting food stuff in it.
