Arenga engleri / 1-year, 4-months on
Hi there - just an update on my Arenga engleri to show you. Has been planted out now for 1-year, 4-months, and is slow to start growing. The two leaves in the pic that are numbered are the leaves it has grown in that time. I have no expectations for this palm, and is just an experiment. All the original leaves have burnt off in that time. So here it is today and hopefully it get faster as it gets older.

Rod,looking good. Have you tried some of the big Chamaedorea species? Some could pass for Adonidia or Dypsis lutescens. And,they all do fine in cool summers and slightly below freezing temps.

Hope your Arenga does more than mine do here in Berkeley, I only get about one new leaf in an 18 month period. After 5 years in the ground, I'm more than ready to remove them.

In my experience the Arenga engleri really prefer hotter summers, something we just don’t get in Berkeley/San Francisco. I’d suggest Chamaedorea costaricana is another superb large growing Bamboo Palm type.
